Grass Fed Lamb
Beginning in the late 1800's Sweet Grass County was one of the capitols of the sheep industry, at one point to producing  the most  wool in the world. Jacob Hoyem built a huge lambing shed in 1900 and ran large numbers of sheep along with his sister's in laws, the Halvorsons, under their HB brand. The Halvorsons are still in the sheep business today, and no matter what this ranch will always run sheep ,albeit not in the numbers of 1900 or the almost 2 bands, 1800 ewes, we ran until the 90's. But its part of the history here and we believe its important to continue it.

Our lamb is raised under the very same conditions as our steers. We sell whole and half carcasses. $5/lb
"There's something about the range grass here. It's short, coarse and produces the most wonderful tasting lamb and beef..."
PREDATOR CONTROL

There have always been coyotes, mountain lions, bear  and to a lesser degree wolves in our area. We feel its our job to protect our sheep, not the government trapper.

To this end we have always used dogs. Great Pyrenees, Akbash, Shar Planetz, Maremma are some of the breeds we have used. Dogs have been used as guard animals in europe for generations but are relatively new in this country. They are are extremely effective. We have had very few losses over the years, and have found that the less we disturb the coyote population especially , and make it uncomfortable to be aggressive towards our sheep, the more they leave us alone.

More recently with our smaller numbers we adopted some BLM "wild" burros from Nevada. We have been impressed with their vigilance and dedication to the sheep from the very beginning.
